Design Lines

A design typically uses several types of lines, but generally there is a dominate type of line that contributes to the overall feel of the space. Take a moment to look at these examples, noting their ability to stretch or shrink space.

HORIZONTAL LINE

The eye travels a horizontal line, widening the area. Horizontal lines feel calm and suggest rest and relaxation. Horizontal lines also work well to visually re-adjust the height of a room.

VERTICAL LINE

The eye travels upward and adds visual height to a room. Vertical lines can be formal and express forcefulness.

CURVED LINE

Curved lines can suggest joy and refinement and can be used in both traditional and contemporary design.

DIAGONAL LINE

The eye is forced in either a horizontal or vertical direction. Diagonal lines are dramatic and imply action or movement. Note diagonal back splash and floor on an angle.
